The Return of the Mullet Ride

The one and only Mullet Ride (aka the Baldwin City Historic Gravel Road Bike Ride) is next weekend. This is our original gravel grinder dating back before anyone knew what gravel was or coined the term - Gravel Grinder. Gerard's Mullet ride is great for both the experienced gravel grinder and any newbies out there - 25 and 50 mile routes are available.

Meet up at the Antiques on the Prairie shop (High St & 6th). We will have a 10:00 am departure time for the 25 mile route.

Mother nature is not cooperating with our planned Colder than a Well Digger Ass ride on Sunday. The course we intend to use needs to be frozen over and is currently very muddy. We will reschedule the ride once the weather turns really cold. You can not really have a Colder than a Well Digger Ass ride when it is 40 degrees out can you. That would just be wrong.

In replacement for our ride the crew will be out at the SFT Annual Bicycle CancerThon held at Abele's Field in Leavenworth, KS. This is Santa Fe Trails Bicycle & Coffee Shop's annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The Prowl Report

A great ride today as another mild day greeted our gravel grinders. A little chilly at first as most riders opted for a light layer of clothing with the afternoon highs around 60. A strong South wind combined with temps in the 30's and some rather steep climbs made for a real challenge as we headed toward Drexel. We may have to rename this ride the Wind Howler II. All that hard work riding into the wind paid off with a nice ride back.

A very nice route with a couple of "C" roads and abandoned bridges were navigated. Most agreed that this was good preparation for the upcoming DK200.

Thanks to John Williams for hosting the ride and to everyone who came out and made today's ride very fun.

A busy weekend for rides this weekend.

Friday the 13th we have a night ride planned. Check out the Paraskevidekatriaphobia Night Ride if you enjoy riding at night. Current plan is to ride the Smithville MTB Trails. Bring your mountain bike, some lights and get ready to cure that Paraskevidekatriaphobia you might have.

Sunday John Williams host the Peculiar Prowl. John has a nice 58 mile route (shorter option also available). Expect a brisk pace for the A group with a B group option for those putting in more relaxed base miles.

UPDATE on Jeff's Lawrence ride. Jeff is under the weather and will not be able to lead Lawrence ride.... The Gravel Ride will be postponed by one week.... I have a head cold and will not be able to lead the ride.

New date and time for the Lawrence ride is 1/22 at 9am. See you there.

Why: Why would you want to be stuck on a trainer when you could be gravel grinding :-) Forecast is for temps in the 30's/40's which is really nice for this time of year.
Who: Anyone who has a long endurance challenge on the calendar in 2012 and would like to train with like minded folk.

While no one was attacked by mad Badger this time, several small Badger like dogs made up for it....

Another fun gravel grinder in the books. Weather was just about perfect for a ride for this time of year. All in all a beautiful day to be on the bike. Two flat tires in the A group kept the B group close enough that they finished within 5 minutes of each other. Ride leader Tim Greene learned a valuable lesson "that sprinting ahead to take pictures, putting the camera away and then sprinting to catch the group is harder than it looks" I would have to agree with your sir. It is harder than it looks. Adds a few interval sessions to the ride for sure....

Spring Hill Badger Run

Where: Spring Hill, KS
Why: Because we all know you want to ride a section of gravel where Rob Pennel saw a Badger and thus became Badger bikes. This route also features the coldest spot in JOCO. Time to get on your bike and start training for all those races and long epic spring rides. That and it is too early to start breaking your New Years resolution to ride more....

New Years Day Ride

Where: Lawrence Visitor Center - Intersection of 2nd Street & Locust Street
Who: Any and all are welcome

Description: This was the inaugural ride of the Lawrence Mountain Bike Club in 1996. Rain, snow, cold — it doesn't matter, we always start the year off by going for a ride at the River Trail then having refreshments at Johnny's Tavern. The New Year's Day Ride is appropriate for riders of all abilities. We begin the ride on the levy and ride to the River Trail where you may opt to ride as much or little of the 9 mile trail as you like before heading back to Johnny’s!

Bring your cross bike or mountain bike for this ride. We have the trails, levee & surrounding gravel roads that we can use to get in a fun ride to start off 2012. Trail conditions on Sunday will dictate our route.

The big news from CIRREM HQ this year: CIRREM will be capped at 125 racers.

Yes, we know the race continues to grow in popularity so why limit the good fun? And we're sorry that we can't let all-comers experience the day that is starting to feel like a holiday. As in, "Happy CIRREM Day." Like Christmas, only without the bills and calorie-riddled guilt because you've ridden 62 miles.

Here's the deal: This may come as news to you, but CIRREM is supposed to be dirty & small. CIRREM is lowbrow & unpolished. As such, and because the CIRREM launch pad (the Cumming Tap) can only host a finite number of our fellow cyclists, we're throwing a limit on the number of riders. Besides, we want to ensure the experience is what you've come to expect from us, and nothing less. We promise more of the same uncompromising good times with your 2012 CIRREM experience: Food, beverage, kick-in-the-junk terrain, prizes, CIRREM schwag, the fellowship of cool people, a battle royale/wrestling match finish, and probably cookies. That's right, I said cookies.

Festivus Recap

Another cold Festivus of Nights ride this year, but it could have been worse as it is officially winter now. Despite the cold we had a record turnout and everyone got to enjoy a clear night of riding and some even aired some grievances.

Brian Laswell and his daughter won the best lighting display contest. 2nd place went to Kevin Nierman and 3rd place went to ??? (do not know the name). We still have prizes for 2nd and 3rd place and will deliver on an upcoming ride.

Friday is our big holiday ride of the season - 2nd Annual Festivus of Night s. We will again be holding a contest for the best lighting display on your bike and/or person. Prizes will be announced Thursday so check back. Competition will take place during the first mile of the ride. Winners announced by the turn around so that all can celebrate with their favorite beverage.

We have received many questions about our Festivus ride. Such as...What type of bike is required? The Little Blue Trace trails can be ridden with any bike. A mtb/cross bike would be best, but any bike is o.k. Another question is will I be able to keep up on my full suspension mountain bike? Festivus is about showing "feats of strength" no mater the type of bike you have. Seriously, any bike is o.k. We will have two routes available and two levels of groups. A - faster group, B - Recreational level. Are lights required? It is suggested that a front light be used and at a minimum a rear reflector.

Route map is below. We have two options with both leaving at 6:00 pm. Option 1 (25 total miles) is the full out-back route to the Blue Mills Road trail head. Option 2 (16 total miles) is a ride out to the M-78 shelter and back. Both routes are out-back.

Halycon Grinder Report

Today was a special treat with Coffee and Donuts to start the ride. Special Thanks to Sun Flower Bike Shop for opening their shop and hearts to us Gravel Grinders.
Two routes were available with only 6 riders doing the entire 66 mile route. The majority opted for the 40 mile option. Due to some constrution old school bushwacking was in order.

Due to the recent rains some of the roads were impassable which many of the 40 mile riders found out first hand. A quick call alearted the lead group as many found some mud reminiscent of the Dirty Kanza on B road 1600. Total ride time for some was up to 5 hours. Luckily the weather was night for a days ride.

Jayhawk Grinder Report

The morning sun had burned the early fog off, but the temps were still a little cold as we rolled out of Johnny's shortly after 0900. Forecast called for a rise in temps, but I think most of us overdressed with one too many base layers.

The first part of the route was flat so we all stayed together and enjoyed a pleasant start to our ride. Two sections of levee brought us over to the trail head for the LRT. The early reports were that the trails were o.k. so he dived in. After a very fun little trip down the LRT we regrouped and headed out to the rolling gravel section of our ride.

A couple of groups formed as the lead riders set a steady tempo. This brought up a conversation in one group that we need to divide up into groups based on ability levels and current training desires. I agree that this is a good idea and plan to have A and B groups at the remaining rides. I volunteer to lead the B group :-)

Another fine gravel grinder in the books. Today's ride was a very nice route which featured I do believe the highest percentage of gravel to date - 85% grave, 10% single track & 5% pave'. Adding a section of the Lawrence River Trails in was very fun. The trails were in great shape and offered plenty of traction for our cross tires.

A wonderful turnout for today's gravel grinder. I always say that its the people who attend events that make them good and today we had a great bunch of guys. Thanks to everyone who came out and rode our little ride. Special thanks to the Lantern Rouge for coming out and supporting us. He took some pictures and sagged our event.

The conditions were a bit cold, windy and hilly, but that is good old fashion gravel grinder conditions if you as me. We ended up splitting up into two main groups. This was good and both groups were able to enjoy the 42 mile course. Most agreed that the route was a good one with plenty of gravel and scenic views. Next time we will start/finish in Weston so we can enjoy a nice lunch after the ride.

Where: Platte City, MO - Weston, MO
Why: Because we all know you overate on Turkey day. Time to get on your bike and burn off all those excess calories that you consumed.

Come join us for a three-hour tour over some very fine Northland gravel roads. We depart from Platte City, home of the Platte City Fair (oldest fair West of the Mississippi by the way) and quickly hit some gravel classics like Sexton Road, Hackberry Ln and Grass Pad Road (2 shorter route options are available along N. Farley Road for those who wish to shorten the route). We leave the hills behind for a scenic flat route through some farm lands via Kisker Road. Stillings Rd brings us back toward the bluffs and some more climbing. Rolling hills along the country side follows with plenty of gravel goodness. A short downhill run along Hwy 92 and we hit Weston Bend State Park. Here we will jump on the historic Weston Bluffs Trail which follows the Missouri River and the Lewis and Clark Trail. After a pleasant 3.5 mile trip down the Weston Bluff Trail we reach the city of Weston for a water/nature break. After a short stop we proceed North for a scenic 7 mile loop (this may be skipped for those who wish to head back) before heading back to town and then roll East and work our way back alone some more rolling country side to complete our little Gobbler Grinder.

Wind Howler Report

I do not know how he does it, but somehow Tim can pick the windiest days of the year for his Gardner Wind Howler. Although not as windy as last year, this years ride sure lived up to its name.

Another great turnout for our little gravel grinders. The wind caused a few splits, but we ended up getting back together after a little miss direction by the lead pack and a flat tire or two. Tim promised plenty of nice views and gravel. We got both. When ever the voting comes out for the windiest places in Kansas I for one will vote for Gardner, KS.

Full Moon Monty Recap

A terrific turnout for the Full Moon Monty with 23 total riders. The Moon was shining bright, trial conditions were very good, the temps were pleasant and most importantly we had a great group of riders.

Weather for tonight's Full Moon Monty ride looks splendid. Temps in the 40's so dress warm. Clear sky's so we should see good moonlight. Speaking of moons, those of you who were planning on going Full Monty might want to reconsider. We would not want anything to freeze and fall off. Then again if you use plenty of embrovation you might be o.k....

Saturday Tim Greene hosts his popular Gardner Wind Howler. The forecast is for 15 mph winds and not the 30+ like we had last time and that might be a good thing. A fun route is planned with a refueling stop at mile 40.

Expect an update next week on some more fun gravel grinders in November and December including one legged Brett's Halcyon Holiday Gravel Grinder.

We will be starting at New Century Office at 600 New Century Parkway, New Century KS 66031. We will be riding the Kansas plains and there is no hiding from the wind out here. I am still tweaking the route because JOCO has not found a road yet it does not want to pave so roads that are gravel this week may not be gravel next week. Expect around a 62 mile route that essential circles Gardner so you are never too far from your car if you bonk or need to bail early. We will have refueling point around 40 miles.

The times are changing, the full moon will be out and it is time to charge up those lights for some night gravel grinding at its finest. Going "The Full Monty" is up to you. That is not a requirement, but lights are.

We will be traveling the Little Blue Trace Trail, including the new section, on our first official night ride of the year. The course is out-back so if we drop anyone we will pickup on the way back to the start. The pace will be a reserved pace (I will be on a tandem) so I do not see that happening. First timers are welcomed on this ride. Ride time will be about 2 hours including stop at Blue Mills Road (end point).

Today's light rain is a welcomed site and will keep the dust down making course conditions ideal.

Awesome Lone Star Gravel Ride

Curtis Martell is starting the gravel grinding season a little early, but we like the way he is thinking.

From Curtis....Please join me for the third Awesome Lone Star Gravel Ride this Labor Day. We depart at 9:00 AM from the Martell house for about 50 miles of gravel heading southwest to Lone Star Lake and beyond. There are a couple of hills. You might even ride on a "road" you've never been on. Sag stop with Yellow Sub sandwiches and Popsicles delivered for lunch at about 35 miles. When we finish, the beer fridge will be open. 'Cross bike is the weapon of choice but it's been done on an MTB. Maps provided, no cost other than a few bucks if you want a sandwich.

Tim's Excellent DK 200 Adventure

Here is a brief recap of Tim Green's experience from the 2011 DK 200. His pictures can be found his teams site - Cow Town Cycling

Wake up time was 3:45 a.m. to get some food down and everything ready for the race. Bikes loaded, camelbacks filled and bottles mixed with electrolytes. We get to the start at roughly 5:15 and lounge about. I am sag for first leg with Edd riding first. Cliff and I will be taking two support vehicles to the first checkpoint. Promoter is expecting the record to fall today due to better than expected conditions and milder temperatures than previous years. At 6:00 the race get going. Last rider out is Clay. He and Brett overslept and got to the start just as riders were leaving.

Cliff and I leave for the first checkpoint around 7:15. Beautiful country with rolling green hills and very little tree cover. At the toll gate I get a pleasant surprise and score 5 dollars in quarters because the machine was full and people were leaving the rejected quarters in the return slot. We get to the first checkpoint at roughly 8:00 and get setup. First rider in to the checkpoint around 9:15 and is riding a single speed. Mark Cole is one the next riders in and we get him fueled up and going again. Our team comes in about 9:45 and Cliff and I take off together. Roads were in good conditions and the Specialized Borough Armadillo Elite tires are rolling well. We get about 12 or so miles out and run into a group consulting the maps. A small group splinters off to the south and we use them to pull us for the next 2 miles. Big mistake, they went the wrong way. We ran into a bigger group (about 10 to 15 riders looking at maps). I turn on the GPS and figure out we were off course. We turn around and head back. On the way back we run into Brett and Ben Bolin also making the same mistake. Back on course on some B road with about 4 creek crossing and then some nasty hills that break me out of my heart rate zone. We see a dead mustang and at one point one of the biggest vultures I have ever seen (over a 6 foot wingspan) cross our path. I was glad he was not hungry. Rest of route pretty uneventful until Cliff and I run into Clay on the course. He was going to pick up Brett who was out of water and suffering heat exhaustion.

At Checkpoint two, Cliff stops and lets Mike go. I was feeling okay and wanted to stick to plan and do 2 legs in a row. Rick looked exhausted and word was Mark looked bad when he left on this leg. I went out with Mike and after 12 miles had a bout with heat exhaustion and found a section of trees with a cool breeze and called Edd to come and get me. I drank 70 ounces of water and the remaining 2 mixed bottles and by the time Edd got there felt good again. We switched anyways and he went out for the remaining of the leg.

I get up to Check point 3 and find Mark there. He had passed out at 133 miles and a farmer found him on the side of road throwing up and brought him in. He was in first place at the time but had gone out way to fast. I get more water and ice at the store and just finished putting it away when John came in. John looked fresh and was on a roll. I get some pictures and he rolls out. As he does a sheriff's car rolls in and informs the promoters that a dangerous storm is heading this way and to get the riders off the course. He was saying 60 mile an hour straight line winds, wall cloud, golf ball sized hail and ground strike lightning. After talking to promoters I got 2 maps, one for John's Wife, and another for a team also in the lead group so they could follow the riders into Emporia and provide shelter if things got rough. We had 3 riders back in the storm. Two should have been coming in around that time and Edd further back because he started later after replacing me. We find out Mike is off course and North of 56 and figure Rick is with him. Cliff was to figure out how to get Mike and I set out on course to get Edd and bring him to the checkpoint. They were letting us do that without penalty to get riders to safety. There was poor phone coverage on the third leg, so we could not find out where our riders were and I basically had to backtrack the course.

I pass a bunch of riders still riding in the rain and they wave me on when I ask if they need anything like water. Gravel is still okay at this point and another Jeep is not following me to get his riders off course. I pass a farmhouse and things turned ugly. I had to creep down a steep rutted hill only to find a section of B road that was muddy and deeply rutted for as far as the eye could see. I continue and almost get stuck once. The mud was axle deep and in the process of negotiating the ruts managed to knock my bike off the roof rack bending my front fork. Now I have to stop and put the bike on back. Both vehicles stopped in deep mud was not a good thing. Luckily I was able to get going again after putting the bike on a another rack on the back of the jeep. Riders along this section of road were walking in the grass and carrying their bikes. I run into Rick and he flags me down. He is exhausted and freezing from the 25 degree drop in temperature. I get him in and load his bike on the jeep and continue. The jeep that was following us went around and continued, so now if we got stuck we would be in trouble. I wish I would have taken some pictures of this section of road and the riders walking. I was so focused on getting out that I forgot about my camera.

We continued on. After a little bit I passed the Lawrence Cow Town rider walking along the grass. Asked if he needed anything and continued. During this time I find out Rick had been blown off the rode once and hailed on. We finally get off the B road and on to solid gravel. We also got enough cell phone coverage to find Edd. I plot a course on the GPS to get Edd and off we go.

Edd was with a group of riders including Ben Bolin that had encounted an 8 mile section of really bad mud and were walking when a farmer offered them a lift to little town. Three vehicles got to the town about the same time and we loaded up the bikes and people. I had room for bikes but no room for people due all the coolers supporting the 2 teams and solo riders. Luckily Ben has space and Edd heads back with Ben. On the drive out we find out they are re-routing the course around the B roads and putting them on the pavement to get them to Council Grove.

As we drove to Council Grove we found out that Mike was in and Cliff decided not to go out on the last leg due to conditions. My bike was toast, so after checking in at Council Grove we continue back to Emporia. Since Cliff, Mark, and Mike had left already we had to find a way for Edd to get back. Luckily Ben was able to get him back to the hotel.

We still had 3 riders out. Two that were held up at Checkpoint 2 due to the storm and Scott in the mess. Scott got caught in the storm and dropped from the race. Frank and Dan plugged on and made the 10:30 cut at Council Grove by 3 minutes and continued on to Emporia. They made it in to finish 59 and 60 at 2:30 in the morning.

Once we got back to the Hotel we showered and headed to Applebees. What a day....

It is time for some more Gravel Grinders. Jeff Arnaud brings us a classic ride out to Lone Star Lake. Last year (see Groovy Gravel...) we had a great ride on some packed snow and enjoyed some tasty Lawrence brew. Why: It is time to start training for Trans Iowa, Bone Bender 3/6 Hour and more. Get off that trainer and start grinding or you will be wishing you did.
Who: Anyone who has signed up for an endurance challenge in 2011 and needs to get some base miles in.

Distance will be between 50 to 60 miles. Come out and enjoy some of the best gravel routes in the Midwest. A very fun route is being put together that will have all the classics that this area has to offer. Pace will be moderate - 14 to 15 mph average. There will be one designated stop in at the Stillwell station.

Ride update and pictures:

This ride was advertised as a tune-up for bigger events to come. Longer distance and a faster pace. Cooler temps greeted us all, which was good because it kept the muddy sections down to a minimum. The wind was the biggest factor today. A strong tailwind made the trip to Drexel quick work, but made the 30+ miles back much harder. Not to mention that crazy squirrel that tried to take Dan out and all those dogs. What's up with all the dogs down in that area? It has been a long time since many of us have ridden nearly 4 hours (except for Tim Greene on his marathon trainer sessions at the gym) and it showed those last 5 miles.

We take a break locally from our rides with many of us heading up to Chucky's Challenge in Trenton. We resume with Tim's very popular Spring Hill Gravel Grinder on 2/13/11.

John Williams is hosting our next GG on his ever popular Belton- Drexel gravel route. This 67 mile route will take us to Drexel, MO for our first (and only) stop of the day at only store in town - Casey's.

The course feature rolling hills and the pace will be moderate. The first 5 miles are road, but then it's all gravel baby!

Smithville Gravel Grinder

8 die hard gravel grinders showed up for today's ride. Conditions were not as bad as they looked (at least I felt that way :-)). Overnight the Smithville area got a few inches of new snow and turned some of the roads into a true test of bike handling skills.

Ride Update - A very cold morning greeted our fellow gravel grinders this morning. Temps in the teens was a bit chilly, but everyone's adventurous spirit (that and some nice lobster gloves and embrocation lotion) kept everyone warm enough enjoy a great ride.

Our next gravel grinder is a perfect opportunity for newbies with a shorter and flat route along the old Mighty Mo. We begin at E. H. Young Riverfront Park and proceed first to the Missouri Riverfront Trail. Next up is a trip through scenic English Landing Park and quick pass through the farm lands along the Might MO via Rush Creek Rd. We jump on the old River Road for our leg to the small city of Waldron. We take a trip around old Waldron via Moores Feny Road and the levee. Then it is back to Riverside to complete our journey.

Quote of the day: "Probably the windiest day I've ever ridden - John Williams"

Wow, that ended up being epic. The wind was absolutely brutal with gusts over 30mph and sustained that had to be over 25mph. A total of 6 of us braved the wind. The first 16.4 miles were almost all into the wind, before we turned South and East for a good tailwind. The rest stop at 27 miles was a welcomed relief. Just about everyone grabbed a donut and cup of coffee to refuel. After about a 1/2 hour we went back out into the wind to do the last half of the route. More tailwind to about mile 33 before we turned North again into the wind. Of the last 16 miles 8 of them were against the wind. Our average was 12.9 mph for the ride. Just about everyone commented that this ride was windiest they had ever done. I agree, I ride out at Gardner just about every day and that is the worst I have seen it. We also did 2427 feet of climbing for this route. My initial GPS of the route was way off in that it told me we would do around 683 to 700 feet of climbing. So my legs are toast now - Tim

What: Wednesday Night Gravel Grinders
When: Wednesday's starting at 5:30 pm
Where: Peoples Bank parking lot - corner of 199th and Metcalf
Who: Anyone that is not afraid of the dark. CX bike recommended, MTB bike o.k.

Route is 73 miles with lots of gravel roads and some pavement through towns. The first 6-ish miles will be on multi-use trail south of Lawrence and go across the Clinton Lake dam before getting into some nasty rolling gravel going south to Ottawa.

Our first night gravel grinder was a success. Turns out no one was afraid of the dark. Very nice evening for a ride with only a brief period of misty rain. By the end of evening the temps were perfect for riding.

One Fast Gravel Grinder

What a great day for a ride, especially on gravel. Today's Chamois Butt'r Gravel Grinder was well represented by several local teams and gravel enthusiasts. Plenty of happy faces before the ride started our of Smoke' N Davy trail head.

A route of just under 50 miles with plenty of hills which created some separation within the group. Today's little grinder felt more like a race at times, but was fun non the less. We dropped several along the way and waited a couple of times but the gaps were large by then. A suggestion was made to have two different rides - one fast, one slow. This is a good idea and we will make every effort to find some more ride leaders to make this happen. Maybe also have shorter route for the slower group was also suggested.

The gravel roads north of Smithville Lake offer a wide variety of routes. We look forward to having another gravel grinder there soon. Thanks to Curt Shelman for creating the route and leading us along the way. Thanks to Paceline Products for their continued support and for making the best skin lubricant out there.

Why: Training for the upcoming RIM, Gravel Worlds and Cruise the Blues.

Route: A mix of gravel, levee and back country roads. A fair amount of county roads could be used depending day of ride conditions, but plenty of gravel to keep us sane. Some hills will be climbed. Any road bike with a good sturdy set of wheels can be used. Cross bike preferred, but not required.

This is a Show-N-Go ride, please bring food/water and anything you require. We will stop at Weston and Parma Woods (return leg) for water. Please obey all traffic laws. You are responsible for your own safety.

I will most likely be on my 29er this week unless I fix my broken shift levers by Saturday.....

Frozen Muddy Gravel Fun

Plenty of muddy, frozen gravel riding this weekend. Saturday was nearly 65 miles of frozen mud up in Iowa. Cirrem results here. Sunday the gravel roads thawed a little quicker than expected turning the Smithville Gravel Grinder into a muddy mess. Still everyone seemed to have fun, which is why we are out there riding in the first place.

Update 2/21/10 (7:30 a.m.). The Smithville Gravel Grinder has been cancelled for today due to unsafe driving conditions and icy roads. And the fact that I could not get out of my neighborhood with my little truck due to the slick roads....

Update 02/20/10:

Randy marked the course today. Yellow flags = Left Turn, Pink flags = Right turn. Bailouts are flagged with both Yellow and Pick. See below map for bailouts.

Based on the forecast (30 degrees), the planned MTB ride before the GG is not going to happen. We will meet at around 9:50am for a planned 10:00am departure for the gravel grinder. This looks like it is going to be a real classic - wintry mix, snow, slush, ice, slop.

Mullets 'n' Mud 'n' Good Times

What is a Gravel Grinder without some Mullets? You are not really doing it correctly if you don't see plenty of mullets or dead squirrels on your gravel grinders. Both were found on Saturday's Mullet Ride hosted by Gerard Arantowics. As advertisted, this gravel grinder was held at a much more relaxed pace which allowed for more social riding and some good times riding the scenic and historic roads of Baldwin City.

We had a good group start today's gravel grinder. Not all completed the ride. Some like, Mark and Joe, joined us for part of the ride then headed back home to complete a long day in the saddle. Some like John Williams were not able to finish the ride due to mechanical failures. You would think someone in the group would have carried a spare chain ring, but noooo....

The majority of the route was on gravel roads. As expected during this time of year they can get a bit muddy. Everyone surprisingly rode the muddy spots like true champions and never missed a pedal stroke. After a few miles the mud had flung off and we were rolling along.

During the ride we visited some interesting sites like Signal Oak, the Battle of Blackjack and we learned about a section of land that produced over 10 million dollars in 10 years from those little oil pumps.

Mullet Ride

Gerard Arantowics is hosting our next Gravel Grinder this Saturday. His annual Mullet Ride is a must do. Course will include some nice gravel roads around Baldwin City. Pace for this ride will be very mellow and is very mountain bike friendly. Course distance is 25 miles with a 12 mile option. Maps will be available.

Chucky's Challenge

Doug Long sends word that Chucky's Challenge is still a go. They only got about 1 inch of snow and everything is looking good for tomorrows ride. The 54 mile route has been flagged and custom designed for our current weather - Flat and Fast.

The third Annual Chucky's Challenge gravel grind will be rolling out of Jamesport at 10:00 am on Saturday-Feb. 6th.

The route will utilize the fine ground gravel via Amish buggies, some paved sections, and the rolling hills of the "Green Hills" region. I hope to put together approx. 60 miles of route with a shorter option. We had a SAG at approx. 1/2 way last year. It took the fast guys over 4 hours to complete the ride last year and there was at least one hill that 90% of the riders walked.

The start is at the 4 way stop downtown Jamesport. There is plenty of parking in the lot next to the Jamesport Tavern. We had 20+ riders last year and hope to continue to grow this till one day it may become a competive event.

Why this ride? Chucky says “Lighten up dude, I wanna see my shadow! After being in a hole for 4 months, I’m ready to break the ice, hang out with my friends, and get the riding season started.” The ride drew 20 riders in 2009.

Starting time is 10:00 a.m. and we’ll be departing from the 4 way stop right downtown next to Gingerich’s Dutch Pantry . It’s “show-n-go” so there is no participation fee. Just show up and we will provide route maps and all the gravel riding you can handle. This will not be a race but don’t let that frighten you back into your den.

The 2010 route will traverse the hills and hollers of the Green Hills region with some “aggie flats” thrown in for recovery. Riders can choose either the “Full Chucky”-60 mi. or the shorter “Lil Chuck”. Most of the route will be on smooth crushed limestone suitable for cross or mountain bikes. The route will be posted and blazed the week of the ride so we can hopefully stay away from any fresh gravel maintenance “large gravel” and pick the best route.

Jamesport is an Amish community, so expect to see horse and buggies and prepare to take a little step back in time. There is a small grocery, some restaurants, and a “watering hole’ for post ride libations.

Groovy Gravel 'n' Broken Spokes 'n' Fish Bowls.

Sundays ride start at Curtis' house. Temps were in the 20's but the sun was coming out and it looked like it was going to be a great ride. Bill handed out maps and Curtis covered the course route before we headed out. Little Martell was dressed and ready to go, but his darn rig did not even have pedals....

The Lone Star Gravel Grinder, hosted by Bill Anderson, traveled from the University of Kansas campus along rolling twisting gravel road to the sleepy little town of Lone Star. Some nice groovy gravel with many sections still snow packed with a thin layer of snow were encountered along the ride. After a short loop around Lone Star Lake we headed back rolling along on the snow packed gravel and back country roads.

Ride went very smoothly except for..... Mr. Pot Pie sprung a leak early on the ride. Don't you hate it when your bladder leaks. Poor guy had a frozen water fall coming out of his jacket the entire ride.....We went slightly off course Sunday. GPS said we were on route, but Bill's sense of direction and the a printed course map said were heading in the wrong direction. We opted to go with the GPS and ended up added about a couple of square miles of road. I don't the added miles bothered anyone, especially our single speed rider as he had the perfect 46 x 16 gear for the road.... Along that stretch we encountered our other small problem. A broken spoke. But Dan's build job was first rate and only required a wrapping of the spoke to get us going again.

After the ride about half the bunch headed for some refueling and rehydration at the 23rd Street Brewery. The promoters of next weeks Chucky's Challenge were also on hand. They had just finished up 4 days of riding and needed some recharging. The special of the day was "Fish Bowls". 60 oz of your favorite ale for $6.00. Personally I was not man enough to finish my Fish Bowl, but Dan, Doug and most of the others had little problem. Heck, even ole' Jeff Arnaud finished his but I think he did have some help from his GF.

Great ride, fine food and good times. Thanks again to Bill and Curtis. We will see everyone Saturday at the Chucky's Challenge up in Jamesport, Misssouri.

Come join Bill Anderson and friends on a nice scenic tour to LoneStar Lake and back via plenty of gravel roads. Route includes 3 long climbs and some very scenic country side. After a quick tour of LoneStar Lake we head back to Lawrence.

Ride begins and ends at Martell's house . About a mile west of 23rd street and Iowa. Here is the map to the start. The gravel fun begins shortly after our depart.

Cole's Pain Cave

Today's Spring Hill Gravel Grinder was a little harder than planned. Partly due to the wind, partly due to running the course in reverse and mainly due to crazy ass ride leader Mark Cole. The gravel road conditions today were very good with mostly smooth packed down dirt making the pace very fast at times.

I would like to apologies to the riders who got dropped. The remaining rides will be at a more sane pace I promise.

Our next gravel grinder is again south of the metro and begins/finishes in the wonderful town of Spring Hill, Kansas. Spring Hill is Johnson Counties first historic district and has a rich history of stamina and a fun-loving spirit. Both of which will come in hand Sunday as Mr. Cole leads us on a 46 miler.

We will meet at Price Chopper off of 169hwy and 223rd Street. Address is 22350 S Harrison St, Spring Hill, KS 66083. NOTE: Do not come down 223rd from 69hwy, it's closed... Cut over on 199th, or 179th street to 169HWY.

Mud 'n' Fog 'n' Hills

Today's Paola Gravel 'n' Hills 'n' Trail could have been called Mud 'n' Fog 'n' yea Hills. Despite the less than ideal conditions a dozen riders showed up to partake. One ride can as far away as 2 hours to "get in some riding" Many rural roads are still covered in snow/ice and not safe to ride.

Upon arriving at Wallace Park we were pleasantly surprised that a dozen liked mined riders were just as crazy as us. A good turnout and a great bunch of guys enjoyed the afternoon following Randy's ride throughout Paola and surrounding areas.

Finders were the opimal equipment choice for the day. Only Randy Rasa and Tige Lamb had sense enough to bring them. Everyone else left there at home including me. I actually had them in my hand but did not thing I would really need them. That shows you how much I know.

Randy led us out of Paola into dense fog and onto the awaiting gravel roads. Oh, did I say gravel. I ment muddy roads :-)

Paola Gravel 'n' Hills 'n' Trail

Our next Gravel Grinder heads to Paola, Kansas for a nice 45 mile route. Below is the route in detail which features a lot of gravel and yea some climbing. Just the way we like em.

The starting point is Wallace Park in Paola, KS. The route heads west to Peoria, then onto the Flint Hills Nature Trail thru Rantoul and on to Osawatomie. From there we ride to John Brown Lookout (which should give us a great view of the surrounding countryside) and back to Paola. It's about 45 miles with lots of short but steep little hills. No services until Osawatomie at about mile 35.

Directions: From KC, head south on I-35 to US-169, then south on US-169 to the Paola exit. Turn right onto Baptiste Dr, left on Hospital Dr, right on Osage St, left into Wallace Park. Meet in the parking lot in front of the swimming pool.

Baldwin City Gravel Grinder????

We have only one taker so far for tomorrows planned Baldwin City Gravel Grinder ride. Mr. Pot Pie ponied up but everyone else is hunkering down for the record cold temps that await us.

The weather looks to be improving and the roads have all been plowed for next weeks Paola Gravel Grinder. We have a great route planned so make sure you put next Sunday(1/17/10) on your ride calendar. More info coming soon.....

Who is up for a gravel grinder ride on Saturday? It will be "colder than a well diggers ass" but if anyone else is game we will have the ride. Let us know and we will make arrangements for the Baldwin City Gravel Grinder. The route is ready to ride, we just need some riders to make it happen and maybe some studded ice tires.....

1 Degree, 1 Dead Fox and 2 Fools

The extreme temps kept most riders away from the Smithville GG ride except for the most hard core including John Williams and myself. John is the proprietor of Pot Pie which offers "Home style Fine Dining in Kansas City". All I could think about during the ride was a nice hot Chicken Pot Pie. This and a a few layers of clothing was enough to keep anyone warm even in 1 degree temps.

We decided to hit the paved trails first and then work our way to some gravel roads and hopefully single track. The first 3/4 mile was not that bad with packed down snow from all the runners/hikers. After that it appeared the runners doubled back to their warm vehicles which came across our minds. This was John's second visit to Smithville with the first one being last years Bone Bender 3/6 Hour MTB Odyssey. If a person can overcome those conditions and finish then surely we could handle a little snow. The going was hard at times, but fun none the less. A combination of riding and walking was required. Times like these I kind of wished we had some XC skis instead of big old 29er tires.

The decision was made to head to Sail Boat Cove and then take W North to some of the gravel roads. But first we had to make it to SBC. Along the way we ventured into the single track when it was evident that some runners/hikers had packed down the snow. If not, then is was really hard going. At times you felt like you were not going to make it and end up like Mr Dead Fox. We happened upon this poor animal that froze to death.

Once we hit SBC we were able to pick up the speed and get some good riding in. Then we had some mechanicals. My new X9 shifter (1x9 setup) stopped working. Most likely due to the cold weather. Then while climbing one hill John broke his chain and we had to take a break to fix it. The cold really set in while were stopped and it was approaching the 2 hour mark of our ride so the decision was made to head back. I went ahead and left John to fix his chain and went to get my truck just in case he could not replace the link.

Overall the cold temperatures really did not cause us any problems. Now all that snow was a different story....

Date: 1/1/2010

Time: 12:00 Noon.

Description: This was the inaugural ride of the Lawrence Mountain Bike Club in 1996. Rain, snow, cold — it doesn't matter, we always start the year off by going for a ride at the River Trail then having refreshments at Johnny's Tavern. The New Year's Day Ride is appropriate for riders of all abilities. We begin the ride on the levy and ride to the River Trail where you may opt to ride as much or little of the 9 mile trail as you like before heading back to Johnny’s!

Location: Meet in the parking lot across from the Lawrence Visitors Center (Restored Union Pacific Depot) in North Lawrence at the intersection of N. 2nd Street (Mass St.) and Locust Streets, just north of the river.

Bring your cross bike or mountain bike for this ride. We have the trails and levee that we can use to get in a fun ride to start off 2010.

Smithville Gravel Grinder

12/26/09 Ride Postponed ! Mr. Snow Man has decided that it would best for us all to stay home and avoid being on the road ways. Based on current trail conditions and the depth of the snow drifts on the trails. The off-road version is also canceled. Days like this is when we need a Pugsley.

When: Saturday, December 26, 2009 - 10:00 am start time

Where: Smoke N Davey Trailhead (off W Highway), Smithville, MO

Who: Any and all are welcome

Why: Because there is way too much pavement in the world

Route: Mostly gravel roads North of Smithville Lake. "Rolling hills" is a good description of the route. Any road bike with a good sturdy set of wheels can be used. Cross bike preferred, but not required. Distance is ~ 30 miles for this GG.

Weather note: The weather forecast is calling for some snow. If the gravel roads are not safe and clear, we will not have the gravel grinder ride. We will instead ride the MTB/Pave trails in and around Smithville Lake. There are 20 miles of pave trails and 12 miles of MTB trails that we can use. We will announce the plans on Friday night/Saturday morning.

This is a Show-N-Go ride, please bring food/water and anything you require.

Our first Gravel Grinder was a success with a fun 3 hour jaunt on some back country roads, hills (plenty of them) and of course gravel including the Missouri Riverfront Trail. Ride distance on this first one was 45 miles.

Next up is our Smithville Gravel Grinder up in, you guested it, Smithville, MO. We will be starting from the Smokey Davey trail head off W hwy. More details coming later in the week with a course map and distance.

We will try and stay off any high traffic roads. Any road bike with a good sturdy set of wheels can be used. Cross bike preferred, but not required. Distance from E. H. Young is about 38 miles.
